Overview
System Update is a live prime-time news show hosted by the Pulitzer winner author and journalist Glenn Greenwald. The show addresses contemporary topics with unencumbered analysis and investigative reporting, captive to no dogma or faction.
CONTEXT
After his departure from The Intercept, a US investigative journalism platform that he co-founded, Glenn Greenwald decided to continue presenting his System Update program with a new independent hard news format. This required the development of an expanded design system update for the program, which is now broadcast live from Monday to Friday in a new news model with interviews and special guests.
Produced in Brazil, System Update has already hosted several iconic guests from the North American political and cultural context. These include US House Speaker Mike Johnson, journalist Piers Morgan, political scientist John Mearsheimer, and musician and activist Roger Waters.
SOLUTION
To build a strong visual identity that reflected Glenn's personality and the relevance of his career, we created a flexible and imposing graphic system that combines investigative journalism with the flavor of the new wave of digital content.
Therefore, the graphic manifestation of the program was built using the visual language of ASCII art (a digital art format that uses standard system characters to create images, drawings, letters, and other types of art) applied to a high-contrast color palette that could be applied to any image, allowing for varied visual approaches for the diverse themes covered in the program.
Inspired by counterculture classics such as The Matrix, Fight Club, and The Wall, the program's aesthetic conveys the idea of alertness and surveillance. The logo, composed of orbital repetitions, represents the constant search for information.
